Having spent three months working in a Windows environment I thought it was time to do a post on tools that I have found that make my life suck less.

  • baretail - excellent tool for following multiple log files

  • baregrep - excellent tool for performing text search operations on multiple files

  • winscp - gui tool for transferring files to and from Unix hosts (via ssh)

  • putty - windows openssh client

  • console.exe - tabbed based, variable size command terminal for windows (why hasn't Microsoft done this?)

  • notepad++ - a much better text editor than the standard notepad app

  • chrome - needs no introduction, however I rely heavily on the following plugins:

  • lastpass

  • xmarks

  • adblock plus

  • yubnub (default search engine)

  • evernote clipper

  • evernote

If you own a PS3 and would like to stream media from your computer (windows, mac or linux) - you must get ps3 media server, it is awesome. www.ps3mediaserver.org

Then there are the usual ones for the home box: steam, itunes, kindle, Lightroom, Elements etc.

If you haven't seen this, and you run Windows (and you have admin/poweruser rights), you probably want to take a look at this: http://www.ninite.com fully awesome!
